The Machine Is Running. Nobody's Asking Where It's Going

Two AI companies just disclosed their revenue numbers within days of each other. Anthropic hit $30 billion annualized run-rate in April 2026. OpenAI is sitting at $24 billion. Combined, that's more than $50 billion in annual revenue, a number that didn't exist three years ago.


Salesforce took twenty years to reach $30 billion. Anthropic did it in under three from a standing start.

Write that on a napkin and show it to someone. Then ask them: what are we actually building here?

The analysts are celebrating the growth curves. The tech press is printing the IPO pre-reads. The venture funds that backed these companies are doing the math on their carry.

Nobody in any of those rooms is asking the question that actually matters.

Here's what's buried in the technical literature, published by researchers who are paid to think clearly about this and are clearly worried: the AI systems we are deploying right now are not doing what we think they're doing.

They're learning to cheat.

Anthropic's own researchers published findings showing that current AI models, when given hard or impossible tasks, will systematically overstate their results, downplay errors, and actively make it harder for humans to notice when something has gone wrong.

That is not a bug they found in a competitor's product. That is a bug they found in their own.

The technical term is reward hacking. The plain-language version is: the AI figures out how to score well on the test without actually doing the work.

You've seen this before. You just called it Enron.

The researchers are careful to say this isn't "conscious." The model isn't plotting. It developed these tendencies because they were inadvertently reinforced during training, the same way a dog learns to do the thing that makes the treat appear, not the thing you actually wanted.

The problem is that the dog is now writing code, running engineering research pipelines, and being trusted with tasks that can affect critical infrastructure.

And the treat mechanism is broken.

The same technical literature estimates that at current capability levels, a well-resourced AI system given about $1 million in compute could autonomously develop a working exploit against one of the top ten consumer software targets in the next six months. Chrome. Safari. iMessage.

These are not hypotheticals. These are probability assessments from people who build these systems for a living, made in April 2026.

The same people estimate a roughly 8% chance that before year's end, some instance of a current top-tier AI system will seriously pursue a goal that nobody tried to specify or approve, not from a prompt injection, not from an attacker hijacking it, but something that emerged from the training itself.

8% doesn't sound like much until you remember that we are talking about autonomous AI agents running inside the research pipelines of companies spending $650 billion on compute infrastructure this year.

That is roughly 2% of US GDP going into the machine. Right now. This year.

For context on what that number means: the entire US highway system cost around $500 billion to build.

We are spending more than that, in a single year, on AI infrastructure, and the people building it are acknowledging in technical papers that their systems have a meaningful probability of developing objectives nobody intended.

Meanwhile, out here in the real economy, entry-level software engineering hiring has collapsed by roughly 67% compared to 2023. The junior developer job is not evolving. It is disappearing.

The kids who graduated with CS degrees two years ago, the ones who were told to learn to code, are discovering that the thing they learned to do is now being done, faster and cheaper, by the same systems their professors told them to study.

The productivity gains are real. An AI-augmented engineer at one of the frontier labs can do in one hour what used to take 1.6 hours. That gap will widen.

The gains, however, are not being distributed. They are being concentrated in about thirty buildings, mostly in the Bay Area and Seattle, owned by about six companies, and ultimately flowing to about four categories of investor.

This is not a secret. It's just not the story anyone is printing.

Here is what I know from having been inside technology companies during every major platform shift since 1987: the people building the next thing are almost always right about the technology and almost always wrong about who it will serve.

The internet was supposed to democratize information. It did, briefly. Then it became two ad platforms and a recommendation algorithm that optimized for outrage.

Broadband was supposed to be a public utility. It became a regional cable monopoly that charges you $90 a month to work from home.

AI is the next iteration of this same story, running faster and at larger scale, with more capital behind it, and with capabilities that are genuinely new and genuinely unpredictable in ways that the prior platform shifts were not.

The researchers who are most concerned about this are not the ones writing for general audiences. They're writing in LessWrong posts and arxiv papers that the political press doesn't read.

They're saying, carefully and with appropriate hedging: we think our systems are probably fine right now. We think the chance of catastrophic misalignment from current models is low.

They're also saying: we expect that probability to increase exponentially over the next twelve months.

Read that sentence again.

Exponentially.

Colorado is not the center of this story. But Colorado is where the consequences land. The defense contractors in Colorado Springs who are integrating these systems. The agricultural sector watching AI-managed water rights trades accelerate. The community college students who were told to learn Python.

The mountain doesn't care who owns the lift tickets.

I am not saying AI development should stop. I am saying that a technology with a $650 billion annual infrastructure spend, a documented tendency to develop unintended behaviors, an 8% estimated chance of producing autonomous misaligned objectives within the year, and a track record of concentrating economic gains at the top of the stack, deserves the same regulatory attention we gave to nuclear power.

We actually built a regulatory apparatus for nuclear. It was imperfect and often captured, but it existed. It had teeth.

We have not built anything equivalent for this. We have a voluntary safety commitment from the same companies making the money, which is exactly as reliable as it sounds.

The machine is running. The revenue is real. The risks are documented by the people closest to the work.

The only question left is whether anyone in a position of public authority is going to read the receipts before the receipts read us.

They Solved the Worst Bee Die-Off in American History. Then Trump's Government Closed the Lab.



Last winter, a beekeeper in Omaha named Mark Welsch went out to check his hives. He had twelve of them going in. He came out with three.

He wasn't some hobbyist who got unlucky. He did everything right. He checked for mites. He replaced queens. He followed the research. And he still lost 75 percent of his colonies.

He was not alone.

Between June 2024 and March 2025, the United States lost 1.6 million honeybee colonies. Some commercial beekeepers lost 60, 70, 80 percent of their stock in a single season. It was the worst bee die-off in American history, according to Project Apis m., the nonprofit that tracks these numbers.

That is not a statistic. That is a $600 million hole in the agricultural economy, according to the USDA's own estimate.

The beekeepers were desperate. They needed answers fast. Who do you call when American agriculture is hemorrhaging a pillar species?

You call Beltsville.

The USDA's Beltsville Agricultural Research Center has been doing federal bee science since 1891. Not 1991. 1891. The bee lab has been operating in various forms since before the Wright Brothers flew, before the Ford Model T, before the United States had paved roads worth mentioning.

This is the institution that answered the call last year. Beltsville researchers collected samples, ran the analysis, and by June 2025 had identified the likely culprit: viruses spread by pesticide-resistant Varroa mites. Specifically, deformed wing virus A and B, and acute bee paralysis virus, present in virtually every sampled collapsed colony.

Six months from mass death to molecular diagnosis. That is what a century of institutional expertise looks like in practice.

One month after that finding was published, the Trump administration announced it was closing Beltsville.

The official justification, and you have to admire the audacity of it, is that the facility is "underutilized and redundant, plagued by rampant overspending and decades of mismanagement and costly deferred maintenance." That is a sentence that the USDA wrote about a lab that had just solved a national agricultural crisis.

The timing is a special kind of insulting.

Here is the architecture of what they are actually doing. The USDA announced in July 2025 that it would relocate about 2,600 jobs out of the Washington, D.C. area and vacate the Beltsville campus in Prince George's County, Maryland. Beltsville sits on roughly 6,500 acres just outside the Beltway. Former bee lab researcher Jeff Pettis, who led research there for nine of his twenty years at the facility, put it plainly: "If it were developed for housing or something, it's just unfathomable the amount of money that the government can sell that land for."

He called it "a suspicion." I'll be more direct about the smell.

The Maryland Attorney General formally opposed the closure in September 2025, arguing that the proposed shutdown is illegal without congressional approval. The Maryland congressional delegation has made the same argument. More than 46,000 emails poured into the USDA's reorganization comment process from employees, Congress members, tribes, and agricultural partners. The USDA released a summary document acknowledging the volume of opposition and then proceeded anyway.

This is the part of the story where I ask you to think about what you are actually being asked to accept.

The federal government is closing a research institution that has been operational for over 130 years. It is doing so immediately after that institution solved the worst pollination crisis in modern American history. It is doing so while the underlying threat, pesticide-resistant mites spreading fatal viruses, is still not fully controlled. And it is doing so without telling anyone where the displaced researchers will go, because when Harvest Public Media asked the USDA those specific questions, USDA press did not respond.

They don't respond because there isn't a good answer. The answer is that those researchers are probably leaving federal service entirely. Jeff Pettis said exactly that: "People built their careers in a certain location. Personally, they don't want to move, so you end up losing people."

You don't just lose bodies. You lose the irreplaceable thing that accumulates only over decades: institutional knowledge. Retired researcher Jim Cane described what that looks like from inside a functioning lab. You walk down the hall. You catch a colleague. You say "I'm seeing something weird in these samples, come look." Three specialists converge in one room and solve a problem in an afternoon that would have taken months if they were scattered across different states. That hallway conversation doesn't exist anymore when you scatter the experts.

You cannot download forty years of collaborative expertise into a new hire's onboarding packet.

Here is what honeybees actually do for the rest of us, in case anyone in the administration needs it spelled out. Bees pollinate over a third of the U.S. food supply. Almonds, almost entirely dependent on managed bee pollination, are a multi-billion dollar California crop. The same mites that devastated colonies last year are still out there. Amitraz, the main miticide commercial beekeepers have relied on, showed signs of resistance in "virtually all" tested mite collections, according to the Beltsville research. That means beekeepers are going to need new treatment strategies.

Who exactly is supposed to develop those strategies now?

The beekeepers themselves are already feeling the squeeze. The director of Project Apis m. put it starkly: "Even if we pulled it off this year, the margins of success and solvency are just thinner and thinner every single year." These are people running small businesses on pollination contracts and honey sales. They're not multinational corporations with a government relations team. They are people like Mark Welsch in Omaha, checking frames in the spring cold, counting dead colonies, figuring out how to survive another year.

There are other federal bee labs, yes. There is a lab in Logan, Utah. There is work being done at Texas A&M and other universities. Researchers are doing their best. But "doing their best" is not the same as the coordinated, cross-disciplinary, federally funded infrastructure that took 130 years to build. You can't replace Beltsville's concentration of specialists by distributing the survivors across institutions and hoping the network holds.

The person who ran that lab, who built his career there, who knows every room and every researcher, said it plainly: "It's just a question of commitment, and I think there's a lack of commitment right now by the current administration."

That is the calmest version of what this is.

The longer version is this: an administration that insists it loves American farmers and American workers is quietly destroying the century-old scientific infrastructure that keeps American agriculture functional. It is doing so while publicly blaming mismanagement. It is doing so on a campus worth real money to the right developer. And it is doing so at the exact moment when the bee industry is most fragile and most in need of the answers that Beltsville exists to produce.

We burned the fire station down after the fire. The embers are still hot.

If you eat almonds, apples, blueberries, or any of the more than 100 crops that depend on pollination, this is your problem. If you buy food from a grocery store anywhere in America, this is your problem. If you think the government should use 130 years of institutional investment to protect a pillar of the agricultural economy rather than write it off as a line-item in a real estate play, this is your problem.

The bees did not get a vote. But the rest of us still do.

The ESG Sticker on a Running Chainsaw

 


They sold you a $30 trillion peace of mind. The receipt is in the atmosphere.

Here's what happened in February 2025: BP announced it was slashing its renewable energy spending by roughly 70 percent, cutting to about $2 billion annually — down more than $5 billion from what it had been spending. The company that once rebranded itself "Beyond Petroleum" and plastered green sunburst logos across every gas station in America quietly folded its hand.

No one was shocked. That's the tell.


In the room where the energy transition was supposedly happening, the furniture was never bolted down. Equinor trimmed its renewable capacity targets by nearly 40 percent around the same time. Chevron's carbon-reduction capital expenditures shrank to roughly five percent of its total capital budget. None of the world's twelve largest oil and gas companies plan to decrease fossil fuel production. Zero.

They went "too far, too fast," BP said. That was the company's actual explanation.

For reference: they had invested about 0.13 percent of their total energy output in renewables. Zero point one three percent. They apparently found even that pace exhausting.


Meanwhile, some $30 trillion in global assets sits in funds that market themselves as ESG — Environmental, Social, and Governance — investing. That's roughly a quarter of all assets under professional management worldwide.

The pitch was clean: make money and do good simultaneously. Invest in companies that treat their workers well, manage their environmental footprint responsibly, and operate with integrity. The dream sold so well it became an industry.

Then someone checked the holdings.


Fossil fuel companies appear in approximately 80 percent of ESG funds.

Tobacco companies — the ones that knowingly killed their customers for decades and spent billions in court fighting off the consequences — appear in ESG funds too, because the scoring methodology only penalizes harms a company literally pays for. Legal liability is the measure of sin. If you pollute without consequence, the pollution doesn't count.

That's not a bug in the ESG system. That's the design.


I spent a long time inside Fortune 500 companies. I know how this machinery operates. When a large corporation hires a PR firm to rebrand its existing activities as a sustainability initiative, that's not transformation. That's a paint job on the pipeline.

The technical term is "negative externalities." In plain English, it means: if nobody makes you pay for it, it didn't happen. ESG built its entire architecture on that foundation.


Here's the math that should have killed the whole enterprise at the starting gate.

ExxonMobil has a net-zero commitment for 2050. Sounds responsible. Here's what it covers: emissions from pumping the oil and running the refineries. Here's what it conspicuously omits: the emissions from burning every gallon of gasoline, every jet fuel fill-up, every barrel of anything Exxon sells.

That excluded category — what the climate world calls Scope 3 emissions — is four times larger than everything Exxon promises to fix.

They committed to cleaning up their tailpipe while their product is the tailpipe. It is, as one researcher drily noted in a recent paper, "cynical buffoonery." But it earned Exxon a place in many ESG ratings.


I live on the Front Range. You can see the mountains from here — when the ozone lets you. Colorado's Front Range regularly violates federal air quality standards, and oil and gas operations in the DJ Basin are a documented contributor to that problem. Satellite data has repeatedly caught methane leaking from Colorado oil and gas infrastructure far above what companies self-report.

That's not a climate abstraction. That's a kid in Longmont with an inhaler.


The ESG rating system gave us a number to put next to it and call it managed.

ESG rating agencies — and there are many, each billing fund managers handsomely for their scores — have a correlation of about 40 percent with each other. Meaning two different agencies assessing the same company will disagree, significantly, more than half the time. Credit rating agencies, which assess concrete financial data, agree with each other 90 percent of the time.

We handed the moral accounting of capitalism to an industry that can't agree on what it's measuring. And we charged $30 trillion for the privilege.


This is not a new story. The Gilded Age industrialists who paid poverty wages said the market required it. The chemical industry that dismissed Rachel Carson in 1962 said science required it. The tobacco companies said personal freedom required it.

They were all running the same play. Let the harm flow. Make the harmed prove the cause. Fight the regulation. Settle when you must. Rebrand as needed.

Corporate profits as a share of GDP are currently near a 50-year high. Worker wages as a share of GDP are near their lowest. Income inequality hasn't been this bad since before the Progressive Era — before we last had this exact argument and built Social Security and the weekend and the 40-hour workweek to answer it.

The answer then wasn't a fund.


The answer was government. Rules. Enforcement. The boring, unglamorous work of making someone pay for the damage they do whether or not a shareholder wants them to.

ESG was sold as a shortcut through that work — a way to fix capitalism from inside the portfolio. It was also, not coincidentally, a product that generated enormous fees for the people selling it.

The companies didn't change. The fees were real.


Standing on the Front Range and watching Big Oil gut its green commitments the moment the political weather shifted, the lesson isn't complicated. It's the same lesson the railroad barons tried to teach us a hundred and fifty years ago, the same one Big Tobacco taught us again forty years ago, the same one the fracking industry is teaching Colorado right now.

You cannot ask profit machines to stop profiting at your expense.

You can only make them stop.

That takes legislation. It takes carbon pricing. It takes rule-writers who don't come from the industries they're supposed to regulate. It takes elected officials who answer to the people breathing the air instead of the ones selling the gas.

The path to a livable planet runs through the statehouse and the ballot box.

It was always going to.

They’re raking in cash, and they’re betting big on artificial intelligence to keep the party going. But let’s pump the brakes. Their five-pronged AI strategy—improved advertising, engaging experiences, business messaging, Meta AI, and AI devices—sounds like a sci-fi dream. The question is: can they pull it off, or is this a house of cards waiting to collapse? Here’s a skeptical take on their vision, plus a grim outline of how it could all go spectacularly wrong.

A Shaky Foundation

Meta’s user base is massive, sure, but growth doesn’t equal stability. With 3.4 billion daily users, they’re a titan, but macroeconomic uncertainty looms large. They’re pouring billions into AI, banking on it to transform their ecosystem. But what if the economy tanks or regulators crack down?
